National Reading Month Activities

National Reading Month and
National Reading Day 2011

RATIONALE

Reading is a basic tool of education and one of the most important skills in every day life. We live in a world of printed words. Through reading we acquire new ideas, obtain needed information, seek support for our ideas, add to our personal pleasure, and broaden our interests. The ability to read helps distinguish human beings from other animals.

At best the purpose of reading coincides with the purpose of good school. It prepares people for the society in which they live and function. More than that it introduces them to the civilization of which they are a part.
In support of the DepEd Memorandum No. 244, s. 2011, declaring the month of November as National Reading Month of every year and November 25, 2011 as the Nationwide Araw ng Pagbasa ( National Reading Day), the Dr. Jovito S. Francisco Elementary School conducted relevant activities and motivated our pupils to learn from the lives and works of eminent Filipinos like the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino.

OBJECTIVES
  • Implement the DepEd memorandum No. 244, s. 2011,
  • Encourage daily various reading and literacy activities in every classroom,
  • Conduct reading and literacy activities in honor of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino and other Filipino heroes,
  • Conduct a one hour synchronized reading program,
  • Conduct a culmination program.
  • National Reading Month and
  • National Reading Day 2011
In support of the DepEd Memorandum No. 244, s. 2011, declaring the month of November as National Reading Month of every year and November 25, 2011 as the Nationwide Araw ng Pagbasa ( National Reading Day), our school conducted relevant activities.

Since the day after the memorandum was handed over, we already started conducting the different reading and literacy activities suggested in the memorandum like Read-A-Thon, Drop Everything And Read, Shared Reading, Five Words A Week, A Paragraph A Day, Library Hour A Week, and Reading Camp, in our respective classes.

We were not able to join the nationwide synchronized reading program which should have been conducted on the first Monday of November because the memorandum was handed over on the second week of November already, but still we conducted our own synchronized reading on the third Monday of the said month.

At 9:00 – 10:00 in the morning of the 25th day of November, we conducted another synchronized reading about the life and works of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino and his famous speeches including his arrival speech that was never read in public by the late senator because of the assassination.

We ended up our classes at 3:00 in the afternoon on the same day to give way for the culmination program, which started with the Doxology of the selected Grade IV, V, and VI pupils, followed by the singing of our National Anthem. Our School English Coordinator, Mrs. Maritess R. Octobre, gave the Opening Remarks which was then followed by the different presentations of our learners like Story Telling, Readers Theater, Smart Talking, Declamation, Interpretative Dancing, and Singing, and then, the program ended up with a prayer

  1. Great post! Promoting reading for pleasure is one of the hardest things when it comes to children. My child was an early reader though. He was reading without anyone else when he completed prekindergarten.

He went through about fourteen days in kindergarten before the school educated us that since he was reading so easily, they needed to propel him to initially grade.

How could we do this? As others have stated, I read to my kid as often as possible. Books are constantly present in our home.

My significant other and I both love reading and composing, so we read to him continually, including books that outlined the letters of the letter set, so he took in his letters and how they functioned.

But most importantly I definitely think that every parent needs to check out "TeachYourChild2ReadQuickly.com" if you're serious about giving your children a head start in life.

    Good luck!
